Healthcare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It helps cover many healthcare costs, but understanding your options — and how they fit together — can make a big difference in your coverage and out-of-pocket costs.

ACA Health Insurance

ACA health insurance, also known as Marketplace coverage or “Obamacare”, is designed to make quality health coverage affordable and accessible for individuals and families.

These plans are offered through HealthCare.gov or your state’s health insurance marketplace, and they must follow federal rules that protect consumers.

Subsidies available:  Depending on your income, you may qualify for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions that make your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs lower.

Metal tiers:   Plans come in Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels — each with different cost-sharing structures.

Guaranteed coverage: You cannot be denied for pre-existing conditions.

Essential benefits: All ACA plans cover core health services like preventive care, doctor visits, hospital stays, maternity care, mental health, prescriptions, and more.

Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance offers flexible coverage options for individuals and families who want more control over their healthcare. These plans are purchased directly from insurance companies or through licensed agents, rather than through the government Marketplace.

Flexible enrollment: You can typically apply for private health insurance at any time of the year.

Custom coverage: Choose from a wide variety of plan types, deductibles, and benefits to fit your healthcare needs and budget.

Broader provider networks: Some private plans offer more access to doctors and hospitals, including out-of-network care.

Variety of plan types: Options may include traditional individual plans, short-term health insurance, health sharing programs, or direct primary care memberships.

Enrollment Periods

Unlike ACA Marketplace coverage, most private insurance options are available year-round.

Individual & Family Plans: Apply anytime, though approval may depend on health status or plan type.

Short-Term Medical Plans: Available throughout the year, with terms from 1 to 12 months (depending on your state).

Health Sharing Programs or Direct Primary Care: Typically open to new members at any time.
